South Coast Labels Urge Better Info Management

South East Labels expects a continuing growth in demand for barcode and scanning equipment for information management purposes. Just a quick glance at recent news stories will explain why.

The phone hacking scandal that has sunk the News of the World Newspaper and besieged News International is an example of what can happen in complex organisations with poor data management and retrieval systems. The problems at New International have been exacerbated by alleged criminal activity, and the scandal inflamed by lackadaisical, if not corrpupt, internal and police investigations.

However, the underlying story is one of a commercial organisation struggling to manage the volume of information for which they are responsible and which will shed light on their business performance. In terms of the metropolitan police, the picture may simply be one of a failure to prioritise the time-consuming job of sifting documentary evidence.

That job now falls to Lord Justice Levenson who will head a judicial enquiry into phone hacking scandal and into media regulation generally. His job will be even more complex as, in addition to the mountains of documents from News International, there is likely to be hundreds of transcripts of interviews and statements to consider.

A process such as this can only be managed by barcoding packets of incoming documents, scanning them, and linking the storage location to a database which will enable easy retrieval and eventual archiving. South East Labels has experience of such systems being a trusted supplier of barcode printers and scanners.

Atos will also continue to collaborate with the IPC and engage in joint activities to support the International Paralympic Foundation.

Atos confirmed that, with just over one year to go to the start of the London 2012 Games, the technology it is delivering on behalf of London 2012 and together with the other technology partners is on-track and on-schedule.

“We are delighted to announce that a year ahead of the London Games, we have signed a new contract with the IPC to help them better promote the Paralympic sports and athletes,” said Patrick Adiba, CEO Atos for Iberia, Olympics and Major Events. “We are absolutely committed to continuing our long-standing collaboration with the IPC and are delighted to have this new opportunity to further support the International Paralympic Foundation.”

Atos has been a key technology provider for the Paralympic Movement since 2002 and became the official Worldwide Information Technology Partner for the IPC in 2008. The contract extension announced today with the IPC extends the longstanding relationship between the two organisations.

“Our website is now our most important communication channel to promote Paralympic sports, athletes and news to a global audience,” said Sir Philip Craven, IPC President. “We are delighted that we can count on Atos, which has the technology expertise as well as the knowledge of the Paralympic Movement, to help us redesign and update our website to meet and exceed the needs of sports fans in 2012.

“Our aim is to make www.paralympic.org, which will incorporate www.paralympicsport.tv, the global hub of all news, video and information relating to Paralympic Sport. We are very pleased with Atos’ engagement in future joint fundraising activities, which aims at supporting the IPC development initiatives and help to further advance the whole Paralympic Movement.”

Atos will design, build and run the new website - www.paralympic.org – which is due to go live in autumn 2011. The new website will use the latest technologies to engage visitors and provide them with the latest information on Paralympic games.

Since 2005 when London was announced host city for the 2012 Games, Atos has been working with the London 2012 technology team and the other technology partners to design, build and test the immense IT infrastructure that will make the Games happen. With just over one year to go, the majority of the technology has been delivered. Key accomplishments include a volunteer portal, a fully operational technology Lab, an equipment Deployment Centre, myInfo+ and a Commentator Information System.

What Are the Issues Around Cloud Computing?

commissum explain all the issues of cloud computing, and explain all about the benefits it can bring small companies.

When we mention cloud computing to our SME clients as a possible solution for the cost effective management of their services, we often get asked “but what are the risk of trusting our information to someone else?” At commissum we believe that many of the issues relating to cloud computing are not new and should be considered for all relationships with service providers, although there are a few specific considerations to be made.

Using cloud computing, organisations can contract service providers to provide infrastructure, platforms and, presently more commonly software. These services enable convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable resources such as networks, servers, storage, applications and other services, provided and released with minimal management effort or interaction of the service provider. The advantages of scalability, reduced lower overhead costs and flexibility are clear and allow organisations to focus on core competencies instead of devoting resources on IT operations.

Most companies have policies and processes in place to deal with commercial relationships with IT service providers. Although these policies and processes will equally work well with cloud services many still do not sufficiently cover the risk related to the security of information.

Applications which are to be provided by a cloud service require the same risk assessment considerations as those provided by a traditional service provider.
What if the solution is:-
· failing to deliver the required business value;
· not performing to the levels agreed;
· not integrated with the existing in-house services;
· unavailable and causes delays and reputational damage;
· suffered from breaches in integrity and confidentiality of information.

But commissum’s Principal Assurance Consultant André Coner suggests that the following considerations specific to cloud computing should
he added:
· Maturity of the cloud service provider and service provider on-going concern issues;
· Complexity of compliance with laws and regulations;
· Legal issues around liability and ownership relating to different hosting countries;
· Storage of personally identifiable information in other countries;
· Consider the much greater dependency on third parties and reliance on external interfaces;
· Greater reliance on Internet connectivity;
· Security issues of public, community and hybrid cloud environments;

With 20 years of experience, commissum is adept at offering practical advice and recommending cost-effective solutions, to deliver a joined-up, coherent approach to protecting an organisation’s information assets.

Effortless and Productive Business Printers from Samsung Now Available At BT Business Direct

Businesses of all sizes need a printer that can keep up with their fast pace and produce high quality documents. With the new ML-5510ND and ML-6510ND mono laser printers from Samsung, printing has never been so easy and effective.

With business printers used frequently throughout the working day and by many members of staff, a common complaint from business owners is that their printing solutions are not as effective as they should be. Paper jams, limited connectivity and high costs are just some of the problems that they have cited as being real drains on productivity and funds.

“Our business customers have often said to us that their printing costs could really do with being lower or that the number of problems they have had with their current printers have caused many problems, from low quality documents that reflect poorly on their businesses to delayed document printing that can make them late for meetings or miss postal deadlines,” said BT Business Directs Print Category Manager, Nadine Roache.

“With a reliable brand in Samsung we are certain the latest line of business-focussed mono laser printers are up to the task. They have many beneficial features, chief of which being a printing speed of 54 pages per minute on the ML-5510ND.”

The printers have a wide range of money and time saving features such as a one touch‘Eco mode’ that with the touch of a button prints using less toner, prolonging the lifespan of toner cartridges for internal or draft documents.

With an onboard 700mhz dual-core processor, the Samsung printers are built with speed in mind, and with Gigabit network connectivity they are perfectly suited to a networked environment with multiple workstations and employees printing from the one printer.

As well as speed, the ML-5510ND and ML-6510ND both boast large paper capacities, with some configurations able to store over 1,000 pages, meaning less time spent on adding paper to the printer and less delays when staff are trying to get documents printed quickly.

CDL Repeats Green IT Awards Success

Leading IT disposal company CDL has triumphed for the second year in a row at the Green IT Awards, winning Recycling Project Of The Year in recognition of a highly successful strategy devised for The Co-operative Travel.

CDL helped to refresh 1,900 systems for the travel industry giant by devising an effective scheme to collect old computer equipment and deliver new hardware, by visiting multiple sites in close proximity on a daily rota. CDL’s security-cleared drivers and vehicular satellite tracking ensured that data security was not compromised.

The ingenious project not only produced fantastic results for The Co-operative Travel, but also succeeded in attaining CDL’s environmental objectives.

The delivery and collection schedule created by CDL reduced the projected timescale of the overhaul by six weeks and cut anticipated fuel use by an enormous 500 per cent (approximately), slashing both the expected cost and carbon dioxide emissions.

CDL Director Jean-Pierre Naylor said: “We are thrilled to be honoured by the Green IT Awards for a second year and proud of our achievements with regard to this project.

“As well as making huge savings in fuel and pollution, we were able to refurbish and reuse 100 per cent of equipment collected from The Co-operative Travel – and we also reused all packaging. South East Labels Comments That Consumers Are The Latest Group To Benefit From The Barcode

The barcode was born from an alliance between manufacturers and retailers. South East Labels, a leading supplier of labelling services and systems, today commented that barcodes are increasingly being used by consumers to further their own ends. It seems that the data contained in a barcode is no longer just owned by the unholy alliance of those who make and those who sell. So, exactly what are those who buy using barcodes for?

When the barcode was patented in America in 1949 retailers and manufacturers had to wait for computer science to catch up before its full potential could be realised. At its heart it is not the barcode per se that does the work but the data that can be attached to it. With such data a simple barcode scan can help track, pick and deliver stock. Once in store this stock can be counted, monitored and automatically re-ordered. Using this data checkout waiting time can be reduced – helping goods sell quicker and getting more paying customers out the door. Furthermore a barcode’s data facilitates the smooth operation of complex and varied price promotions throughout the store.

According to South East Labels, however, the barcode may be striking back. It appears it is no longer serving as the hand-maiden for the efficient supply and sale of goods. Recent events suggest the barcode may also now be a tool for consumers to use, and in ways that may not be how the manufacturers and retailers ever dreamt of.

Stroll down a supermarket aisle. Stop at the soup – keep going past the dried stuff till you reach the tins. Locate a well-known variety of Tomato Soup. Now find the 300g tin. The barcode on this if scanned by a mobile device has provided thousands of music fans with a free mixtape from The Streets’ Mike Skinner. That will be without the manufacturer’s permission. Perhaps not since Warhol appropriated the image of a can of soup as an artwork has pop culture shamelessly plundered soup tins packaging to its own advantage. If this seems too absurd to be true – download the free Mike Scanner app and try for yourself. The barcode seems to have taken on a life of its own beyond its original intentions.

Another example of the barcode being made to strike back is slightly less obscure. Fooducate is an app for mobile devices that reads the barcodes of food packaging. It provides not supermarket cost prices or stock levels however. Instead it aims to cut through the fudged wording and smoke and mirrors that can characterise food packaging. It gives each product a simple to follow health rating and suggests alternatives if you find your health snack is actually a health hazard.

The barcode, it seems, strikes back – the rich data it enables are increasingly being used by consumers as well as by retailers and manufacturers. This merely serves to underline the on-going importance of the barcode. A spokesperson for South East Labels commented that “it’s interesting to see the uses that are being made of barcodes. We have been providing labelling services, software and products since 1988. If your business needs security labels, printed labels or barcodes we can help ensure they are provided in a timely manner. We can’t, however, stop Mr Skinner from attaching a download to a scan of them.”

The new PCI DSS version 2 is effective. What now?

The PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) is a global, open industry standards body providing management of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), PIN Transaction Security (PTS) requirements and the Payment Application Data Security Standard (PA-DSS). The PCI SCC has released the new version 2 of its PCI Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) which has become effective on 1st January 2011.

The new standard begins the three year lifecycle that allows for validation against the previous version of the standard (1.2.1) until 31st December 2011. This provides stakeholders time to understand and implement the new version of the standard as well as provide feedback. The PCI SCC encourages organizations to transition to the updated version as soon as possible.

The changes in version 2.0 introduce no new major requirements. The majority of changes are modifications to the language to clarify the meaning of the requirements and make understanding and adoption easier. Many of the revisions reinforce the need for a thorough scoping exercise prior to assessment in order to: understand where cardholder data resides; reduce the infrastructure and applications subject to the standard; allow organizations to adopt a risk-based approach when assessing; prioritizing vulnerabilities based on specific business circumstances;

commissum’s Principal Assurance Consultant André Coner commented that many organisations fail to adequately segment the cardholder data environment from the remainder of it’s network and therefore are significantly increasing the complexity and cost of their PCI DSS compliance. Because, without adequate network segmentation the entire network is in scope of the PCI DSS assessment. Segmentation is therefore strongly recommended as it will reduce the scope and cost of the PCI DSS assessment. It also reduces the cost and difficulty of implementing and maintaining the PCI DSS controls.
