First Ever Dual Screen Super Tablet/Laptop

With an extraordinary prototype for a dual screen tablet/laptop, Allotropes Design is in development of the AURUS Diamond Dual 10.1. In need of funding to bring the ultimate convenience in multi-tasking to the marketplace, the computer is categorized as both a tablet and a laptop because while the design is all laptop, its two screens fully function independently similar to a tablet. “This computer is the only one of its kind in the world.” said Joshua Letcher, CEO of Allotropes Design. “We will be the first to offer a computer with two 10.1” touch screens in full HD. Soon people will be able to check their email on one screen and manage their stocks or play a game on the other.”

The busy person’s dream, the Android tablet/laptop AURUS Diamond Dual 10.1 needs every pledge of support available to bring the idea to the marketplace. In development from the ground up in partnership with manufacturers for the past twelve months, Allotropes Design is now ready to release the product globally.

“We’ve offered quite a few benefits to the people who pledge to the project. And we will fulfill the Indiegogo pledges first, so supporting us on our crowdfunding page is the best route to take right now to get the AURUS introductory pricing.” added Letcher.

While the AURUS is highly anticipated, if sufficient funding is not received it will hit the market at a considerably higher price, at a much later time, with less features and be released to geographic locations.

Try before you buy with South East Labels

South East Labels (SEL), the West Sussex label provider, now allows customers to try out products before purchasing them. This marketing initiative allows interested buyers to test the quality of a product before finalising a purchase.

Storeowners are often hesitant to upgrade their labelling systems, because there is no guarantee that a newer system will be more expedient. This leaves cashiers with out-dated scanners and verifiers that rarely scan on the first attempt.

Annoyed customers are then forced to stand in long queues waiting for the faulty system to register a reading – a problem most evident in grocery stores where it’s possible for a single customer to purchase over 100 items, which must each be scanned individually.

SEL’s “try before you buy” approach to labelling products removes the risk of upgrading to a system that’s incompatible with a storeowner’s needs. If storeowners are unhappy with the quality of a product, then they can try another or simply retain the system that they have.

When it comes to label manufacturers UK companies rarely offer such a transparent approach to sales. But the people at SEL are confident that their products work, and they express this belief by allowing potential buyers to try new items.

It is likely that more label companies will follow SEL’s lead in the near future. Customers like to know what they are buying, and this is especially relevant when the efficiency of their businesses is at stake.

The process is simple. Once GS1 UK has provided you with the numbers for your products, South East Labels can then do the label printing for you and provide all the barcode labels you require. Minimum fuss and maximum ease. For businesses that would like to manage the process in-house, South East Labels can also supply all the blank labels, label printers and software necessary.

Staff members have years of experience in manufacturing labels, and therefore know all the tricks of the trade. These include printing barcode labels in the ‘picket fence’ style for high quality scans, and leaving enough blank space around the barcodes for interference-free scanning.

Rather than having to do it all themselves, start-ups can take advantage of the expertise on offer. By concentrating on manufacturing labels for small businesses, South East Labels is making 2012 the year to simplify your printing process by placing it in experts’ hands.

OCZ solid state drives now available at BT Business Direct

Solid state drives (SSDs) from computer hardware manufacturer OCZ Technology are now available at BT Business Direct. The new Synapse Cache SSD, released late 2011, can add speed and higher performance to even older model PCs and so is gaining the most interest on a wide consumer market right now.

OCZ Technology releases new high-tech SSDs on regular bases, driving the innovation into every angle of SSD technology. This includes the new Synapse Cache series that enable any computer to enjoy the increased performance of SSD. This technology is independent from hardware, unlike others and can be used on any modern platform.

A standard SSD + HDD setup will make one program fast and the other slow, load one game quickly but the other lags off the scale. The OCZ Synapse cache SSD will integrate with the hard drive becoming one storage solution and dynamically manage the entire storage capacity of the hard drive. It is the typical example of ‘Best of Both World’; full capacity and full performance.

The Dataplex software makes the integration of SSD and HDD possible. The SSD stores‘hot’ data (files that are accessed often) on the high-speed SSD, while ‘cold’ data (files that are less-frequently accessed) are stored on the HDD. Once you have booted your PC with the OCZ Synapse SSD installed, it will start cache immediately. And after two or three reboots the fast responsiveness of the computer will start improving dramatically and the more it is used, the faster it will become.

Vivienne Kennedy, Category Manager of BT Business Direct said: “These SSDs are the ideal addition to any work or home PC and can help to improve running speeds and make accessing files a quick and easy job. We are very pleased to be able to stock them, but customers should buy now in order to avoid disappointment.”

Both the 64GB and 128GB versions of OCZ’s SSDs are available at BT Business direct now and retail at £87.49 and £134.16 respectively.

Feeling Artistic? Design Your Company Labels

Do you feel that your business or company needs that extra touch of class to stand out from the many competitors in the market? Little details such as improved and personalised labels can be the kind of features that would sway a customer to purchase your product. The best way to get labels exactly the way you want them is to actually design them yourself.

Making your labels on a computer needn’t be the laborious or artistic challenge that many may think. There’s some excellent software on the market at the moment which is built to give even the most inexperienced among us the chance to design something. After you’ve chosen how your labels look, you don’t have to wait around for them to be sent to you in the post as you can just print what you want when you want.

The market is full of design software which can cater for these kinds of needs, but there are two programmes which are particularly accessible and come highly recommended. These are EnLabel which is a Windows label designer which comes with many features as well as Batender Basic and Pro which supports multiple label designing and much more. Both of these packages are available from South East Labels and are competitively priced – at £359.00 and £190.00 respectively.

These top of the range software programmes are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what is on offer at South East Labels. Customers can also pick up everything else that they might require to design, print and use their own unique labels with scanners, verifiers, rewind units, applicators and printers all available.

Whilst you are pursuing for your next piece of software or barcode printer at South East Labels it is worth baring in mind that South East Labels also work as a direct label manufacturer and you can order labels which will be sent out to you in the post. There is a huge array of different styles and materials to choose form including barcode, hot foil, asset tracking and Made In.. labels. Check out all of this and more on the website.

Attack on Japanese Defence Contractor

The recent publication of the security breach suffered by the Japanese Defence Contractor, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is just the latest in a long series of similar breaches around the world.

Once again, the discovery of multiple instances of the installation of malware or viruses on servers and desktops is symptomatic of what could be a very sophisticated attack – frequently referred to as Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) type attack.

It is reported that the breach started with what is known as spear phishing attacks – when attackers use very targeted emails; specially crafted/customised to targeted individuals, to maximise the chances of them being opened and any links within them being clicked on and followed.

Martin Finch, Managing Director of commissum, a specialist Information Security Consultancy, said that “the organisation targeted here is a typical victim of such an attack by what could be industrial espionage or state sponsored hacking to access either national security information, or intellectual property. Previous victims have for example included, Lockheed Martin, the world’s largest aerospace company”.

Chris Williams, senior consultant at Information Security company, commissum said that “the usual modus operandi is for attackers to establish a foothold through initial breaches, and then use this to both escalate the level of the breach and establish further access points. This frequently continues over what is often a very protracted time-scale. The victim will, if one or more breaches are discovered, be uncertain as to how many other breaches have been established and where these are”.

China, Russia and Korea have been mentioned as possible sources of this type of attack in the past; China in particular in this case has vigorously and indignantly denied any involvement. That is one of the problems with a sophisticated attack of this type; it can be almost impossible to establish for certain where the attack originated. It is clear though that China is just one of the countries suspected of past involvement in such attacks by US and Western European government agencies.

In addition, as is often the case, the victim is downplaying the impact and the level of penetration achieved. It is reported that the Japanese government were not immediately informed of the breach, as is required in the Defence sector; allegedly it was discovered in August but was exposed by the press this week. It is unlikely that the public will ever know for sure if the breach involved a serious leak of information.

South Coast Labels Urge Better Info Management

South East Labels expects a continuing growth in demand for barcode and scanning equipment for information management purposes. Just a quick glance at recent news stories will explain why.

The phone hacking scandal that has sunk the News of the World Newspaper and besieged News International is an example of what can happen in complex organisations with poor data management and retrieval systems. The problems at New International have been exacerbated by alleged criminal activity, and the scandal inflamed by lackadaisical, if not corrpupt, internal and police investigations.

However, the underlying story is one of a commercial organisation struggling to manage the volume of information for which they are responsible and which will shed light on their business performance. In terms of the metropolitan police, the picture may simply be one of a failure to prioritise the time-consuming job of sifting documentary evidence.

That job now falls to Lord Justice Levenson who will head a judicial enquiry into phone hacking scandal and into media regulation generally. His job will be even more complex as, in addition to the mountains of documents from News International, there is likely to be hundreds of transcripts of interviews and statements to consider.

A process such as this can only be managed by barcoding packets of incoming documents, scanning them, and linking the storage location to a database which will enable easy retrieval and eventual archiving. South East Labels has experience of such systems being a trusted supplier of barcode printers and scanners.

Atos Extends Contract with the IPC

Atos, an international IT services company, has announced an extension to its current partnership with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to include the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Under the agreement between Atos and the IPC, Atos will further contribute to the development of the Paralympic Movement by designing, building and running its new website, www.paralympic.org, which aims to become the worldwide information source for the Paralympic Movement. Atos will also continue to collaborate with the IPC and engage in joint activities to support the International Paralympic Foundation.

Atos confirmed that, with just over one year to go to the start of the London 2012 Games, the technology it is delivering on behalf of London 2012 and together with the other technology partners is on-track and on-schedule.

“We are delighted to announce that a year ahead of the London Games, we have signed a new contract with the IPC to help them better promote the Paralympic sports and athletes,” said Patrick Adiba, CEO Atos for Iberia, Olympics and Major Events. “We are absolutely committed to continuing our long-standing collaboration with the IPC and are delighted to have this new opportunity to further support the International Paralympic Foundation.”

Atos has been a key technology provider for the Paralympic Movement since 2002 and became the official Worldwide Information Technology Partner for the IPC in 2008. The contract extension announced today with the IPC extends the longstanding relationship between the two organisations.

“Our website is now our most important communication channel to promote Paralympic sports, athletes and news to a global audience,” said Sir Philip Craven, IPC President. “We are delighted that we can count on Atos, which has the technology expertise as well as the knowledge of the Paralympic Movement, to help us redesign and update our website to meet and exceed the needs of sports fans in 2012.

“Our aim is to make www.paralympic.org, which will incorporate www.paralympicsport.tv, the global hub of all news, video and information relating to Paralympic Sport. We are very pleased with Atos’ engagement in future joint fundraising activities, which aims at supporting the IPC development initiatives and help to further advance the whole Paralympic Movement.”

Atos will design, build and run the new website – www.paralympic.org – which is due to go live in autumn 2011. The new website will use the latest technologies to engage visitors and provide them with the latest information on Paralympic games.

Since 2005 when London was announced host city for the 2012 Games, Atos has been working with the London 2012 technology team and the other technology partners to design, build and test the immense IT infrastructure that will make the Games happen. With just over one year to go, the majority of the technology has been delivered. Key accomplishments include a volunteer portal, a fully operational technology Lab, an equipment Deployment Centre, myInfo+ and a Commentator Information System.

What Are the Issues Around Cloud Computing?

commissum explain all the issues of cloud computing, and explain all about the benefits it can bring small companies.

When we mention cloud computing to our SME clients as a possible solution for the cost effective management of their services, we often get asked “but what are the risk of trusting our information to someone else?” At commissum we believe that many of the issues relating to cloud computing are not new and should be considered for all relationships with service providers, although there are a few specific considerations to be made.

Using cloud computing, organisations can contract service providers to provide infrastructure, platforms and, presently more commonly software. These services enable convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable resources such as networks, servers, storage, applications and other services, provided and released with minimal management effort or interaction of the service provider. The advantages of scalability, reduced lower overhead costs and flexibility are clear and allow organisations to focus on core competencies instead of devoting resources on IT operations.

Most companies have policies and processes in place to deal with commercial relationships with IT service providers. Although these policies and processes will equally work well with cloud services many still do not sufficiently cover the risk related to the security of information.

Applications which are to be provided by a cloud service require the same risk assessment considerations as those provided by a traditional service provider.
What if the solution is:-
· failing to deliver the required business value;
· not performing to the levels agreed;
· not integrated with the existing in-house services;
· unavailable and causes delays and reputational damage;
· suffered from breaches in integrity and confidentiality of information.

But commissum’s Principal Assurance Consultant André Coner suggests that the following considerations specific to cloud computing should
he added:
· Maturity of the cloud service provider and service provider on-going concern issues;
· Complexity of compliance with laws and regulations;
· Legal issues around liability and ownership relating to different hosting countries;
· Storage of personally identifiable information in other countries;
· Consider the much greater dependency on third parties and reliance on external interfaces;
· Greater reliance on Internet connectivity;
· Security issues of public, community and hybrid cloud environments;

With 20 years of experience, commissum is adept at offering practical advice and recommending cost-effective solutions, to deliver a joined-up, coherent approach to protecting an organisation’s information assets.
